A shipping container filled with fireworks caught fire in the bustling Verulam Central Business District on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a swift emergency response and temporary road closures. The fire was first reported shortly before 3:00 PM, with thick smoke emanating from the container situated near a local business complex.

The volatile contents began to explode, startling nearby shoppers and business owners with loud bangs and bright flashes. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) and local firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, facing challenging conditions due to ongoing detonations and intense heat from the fireworks.

Metro Police officers cordoned off a section of the adjacent road to ensure public safety and facilitate the work of emergency responders. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported, though the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Authorities are expected to evaluate whether the safety protocols for storing such hazardous materials were properly implemented.

This incident occurs as many residents gear up for New Year’s celebrations, underscoring the risks associated with fireworks storage and handling in densely populated areas.
