A presidential amnesty granted earlier this week has brought mixed emotions, with some inmates walking free while others, including musicians T-Gonzi and Chigudogudo, remain in custody.
The amnesty, announced by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere, saw prisoners serving various sentences released. An image shared online showed a prison officer being lifted by released inmates, reportedly in appreciation of his humane treatment.
However, for those left behind, the amnesty is a bitter pill. T-Gonzi, jailed for reckless driving and substance abuse, said his experience shows no one is above the law. "If our judiciary continues to perform their duties without fear or favor, we can all learn from our mistakes," he said.
T-Gonzi is serving an eight-month sentence for traffic violations, including shooting through a red light and possessing prohibited substances. His fellow musician, Chigudogudo, also remains incarcerated.
The amnesty has sparked debate, with some questioning the criteria for release. While it brings relief to some, it highlights the challenges faced by those still serving sentences.
