Sixteen families in Buhera District, Manicaland Province, have been left homeless after their houses were demolished following a long-running land dispute between two village heads.
The families were evicted on 9 December 2025 after a court ruling ordered them to vacate land they had occupied for more than 50 years. The demolition was carried out by the Sheriff of the Court.
Reports indicate that about 197 people, including women and children, were affected by the eviction and are currently living in an old council beerhall under difficult conditions.
The dispute reportedly centred on ownership of the land between village heads William Ngundu and Abia Makumbe Marume. The High Court of Zimbabwe ruled in favour of Marume, leading to the eviction order.
The families were reportedly removed from the land after a default judgment was issued when they allegedly failed to attend the court hearing. The affected residents are now appealing for assistance as they struggle with shelter, food, and other basic needs.
