A new 5.4-kilometer section of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway has been opened to traffic, bringing the total length of rehabilitated highway to 37.5 kilometers. The section, located at Cross Jotsholo, is part of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation and Widening Project, which aims to transform the 440-kilometer corridor into a modern, dual-carriageway road .
The project is being undertaken by eight contractors, with Bitumen World leading the completed sections with 20.9 kilometers opened, followed by Fossil Contracting with 6.2 kilometers, Bitumen Resources with the newly opened 5.4-kilometer Jotsholo stretch, and Syvern Investment with 5.0 kilometers. The contractors Masimba Construction, Tensor Systems, Asphalt Products, and Linash Construction are yet to open any completed sections, with a total balance of work remaining standing at 402.9 kilometers.
The rehabilitation project is expected to improve travel times, safety, and freight logistics, and will have a positive impact on the economy. Motorists have welcomed the progress, anticipating reduced vehicle wear and tear and enhanced reliability for visitors traveling to Victoria Falls.
The project is progressing steadily, with several sections already completed and opened to traffic. The expected completion date is August/October 2026. Once completed, the project will have a significant impact on the economy, improving travel times and safety on the highway.
