Meet Costa Tapiwa Gurupira, a renowned sculptor with a career boasting of half a century and spunning reeking of experience in the art world.
Making his debut piece in 1971, Gurupira has established himself as a master of his craft, capturing the essence of nature and human life through his stunning works.
After spending most of his years in Harare, Gurupira made the decision to shift his practice to Mutoko, where he could establish his trade and share his knowledge with the community. However, it was here that he realized his true calling - to equip the youth with the skills and wisdom needed to combat substance and drug abuse.
Gurupira's passion for sharing his knowledge is palpable, but he admits it's not an easy task. "It's not easy to convince someone who has been addicted to come on board," he says. But he's determined to change the narrative and give a new lease of life to the youths of his community in Tafara.
Gurupira's art is deeply inspired by nature, and he's particularly drawn to aquatic life. "I really love fish, they are always happy," he says, smiling. His sculptures capture the beauty and essence of the natural world, as well as the emotions and reactions of human life.
In addition to his art, Gurupira is also a passionate farmer, focusing on traditional crops like sorghum, millet and rapoko. He believes in living a healthy lifestyle and is eager to educate the younger generation on the importance of this.
Gurupira's ultimate dream is to set up a hub in Mutoko that showcases his art and serves as a tourist attraction. He wants to share his wisdom and experience with the world and inspire a new generation of artists and changemakers.
"It's not about me anymore," he says. "I feel I owe the younger generation, the future, and those willing to partake of my cup of wisdom. I want to give back and make a difference."
