The government is considering reducing fuel-related taxes after citizens voiced concerns over sharp price hikes. Presidential spokesperson George Charamba says "legitimate and reasonable requests" have been made to ease the burden on consumers.
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) recently announced a second fuel price increase in weeks, citing Middle East unrest. Diesel rose to US$2.05/litre, while petrol hit US$2.10/litre, sparking panic buying and transport fare hikes.
Charamba says consultations are underway, but a cautious approach is needed to avoid fiscal risks. Fuel-related taxes constitute nearly 40% of the pump price.
