Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, Ex-MP Mashayamombe Arrested Over Corruption Claims

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume and former Harare South MP Shadreck Mashayamombe were arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on Wednesday. The arrests are part of ZACC's intensified focus on Harare, which accounts for over 70% of corruption cases investigated nationwide 

The specific charges against Mafume and Mashayamombe haven't been disclosed, but sources suggest they may be linked to:
- Illegal Land Allocations: Historically a flashpoint for both Mafume and Mashayamombe.
- Mismanagement of Council Funds: Including "ghost" payments and missing millions.
- Abuse of Office: Allegations often leveled against municipal leaders during land-use rezoning.

Mafume has a history of legal troubles, including accusations of corruption and providing false information to a Commission of Inquiry. In 2024, he faced accusations regarding a US$200,000 bribe involving Quill Associates.
