TEHRAN – A Hermes 900 drone was reportedly shot down yesterday by the Iranian Air Defense Forces. According to reports, the unmanned aircraft was being used by the U.S. military in what is now a four-day-old U.S.-Israeli conflict that has so far resulted in more than 800 deaths. Among the dead are Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and four U.S. soldiers, along with numerous others.
Several reports indicate that the drone was intercepted before it could deploy its payload, which eyewitnesses believe may have included missile launchers.
Images shared online show the drone lying largely intact in a rocky area, despite being brought down. Iranian authorities state that several items were recovered from the wreckage, including boxes containing four Mikholit bombs.
While officials claim the drone was shot down by an air defense system, some observers have suggested it may have been disabled through electronic jamming. This could have forced it to land, allowing Iranian forces to retrieve it. The Hermes 900, manufactured by Elbit Systems, is a long-range drone commonly used for surveillance and strike missions. It is capable of gathering intelligence and carrying precision-guided weapons.
Iranian authorities have not yet provided full details on when and where the incident occurred. However, analysts suggest that recovering a mostly intact drone could give Iranian engineers an opportunity to study the aircraft’s technology.
The incident comes at a time of rising tensions in the region, where drones are increasingly used for military surveillance and operations. This marks a new and sophisticated era of warfare, resulting in significant loss of life.
