The participation of Iran's national football team in the upcoming FIFA World Cup is hanging in the balance, with just three months to go before the tournament kicks off in the United States.
The escalating tensions between Iran, Israel and the US have raised concerns about the team's safety and ability to compete. The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has sparked widespread unrest and protests, with many Iranians demanding justice.
Mehdi Tja, President of the Iranian Football Federation, expressed concerns about the team's prospects, citing the suspension of the nation's domestic league and travel restrictions imposed on Iranian nationals.
"We cannot look forward to the World Cup with hope," Tja said. "This reflects both the political tensions and the challenges faced by our team."
FIFA officials, including Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, have assured that they are working towards a "safe World Cup" with all teams participating. However, privately officials expect Iran to withdraw from the tournament.
In 2022, Iran participated in the World Cup but were eliminated in the group stages. The current tensions may deny them another chance to compete.
The situation remains fluid, with hopes that diplomatic efforts will ease tensions and allow Iran to participate in the World Cup.
