Harare High Court judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda is facing scrutiny from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) following allegations that he sent suggestive WhatsApp messages to a married court clerk.
The matter reportedly escalated into a formal complaint after the messages were intercepted by the woman’s husband.
Screenshots of the exchange were said to have been submitted to the JSC, which is chaired by Chief Justice Luke Malaba.
It is alleged that, in his response to the complaint, Justice Kwenda argued that his privacy had been violated when the woman’s husband accessed the messages. Follow us on our WhatsApp Channel
The clerk is reported to have told the JSC that “nothing happened” between her and the judge.
Chief Justice Malaba is expected to determine whether the conduct amounts to judicial misconduct. If proven, the matter could result in disciplinary action.
The case has drawn comparisons with a 2021 scandal that led to the removal of Justice Thompson Mabhikwa from the bench.
In that incident, Mabhikwa became romantically involved with a clerk at the Bulawayo High Court.
While he was asleep, the woman reportedly accessed his phone, discovered messages suggesting he was involved with other women, and circulated intimate images found on the device to a judges’ WhatsApp group.
The fallout led to disciplinary proceedings and his eventual
dismissal.
