FC Barcelona faced Newcastle United at St. James' Park on 10 March 2026 in a Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match. Lamine Yamal rescued the team with a late equalizer, denying the Magpies a first-leg victory.

Newcastle's manager, Eddie Howe, appeared determined to prove to Barcelona that history would not repeat itself following his side's 2-1 defeat against the Spanish giants in the group stages. However, a converted penalty in the 90+6th minute, awarded after a foul on Dani Olmo, leveled the score. The goal is a crucial one for Barcelona ahead of the second leg at Camp Nou.

Harvey Barnes had given Newcastle United the lead with an 86th-minute strike and was awarded the Man of the Match award, despite Yamal's late heroics. The Barcelona star had a difficult start to the season following a pubalgia injury that sidelined him from September 2025 until early January 2026.

According to Barcelona's sporting director, Yamal was not at 100% fitness in mid-January but has been steadily improving. The 18-year-old scored his first career hat-trick against Villarreal on 28 February 2026. He is regarded as a precious asset by the club, with many believing the teenager could become the heir to Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou.
