Mberengwa East legislator Tasara Hungwe is reportedly under investigation for allegedly misappropriating over ZiG1.3 million intended for constituency development projects. The alleged misuse of funds came to light on 24 March 2026.
The money, reportedly disbursed to the ZANU PF MP in August last year under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), is alleged to have been moved through a series of transactions shortly after being received. Sources indicate that the funds were eventually transferred into the account of a microfinance institution, which is allegedly linked to later paying Hungwe in US dollars.
According to reports, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) had planned to arrest Hungwe last week as part of its investigation. However, it is alleged that a senior ZANU PF figure intervened, preventing the arrest. The incident has raised renewed concerns about the management of public funds intended for local development. The CDF is specifically designed to finance projects that directly benefit communities, including the construction of schools, health centres, roads, and other essential services within constituencies.
If the allegations are proven, this case could become yet another example of how resources meant to uplift communities are diverted for personal gain. It also underscores growing public concerns about the need for stronger monitoring systems and greater accountability in the use of government funds.
At the time of publication, neither Hungwe nor ZACC had issued a comprehensive public statement regarding the allegations. It also remains unclear whether any formal charges have been filed or if investigations are still at a preliminary stage.
This alleged case is likely to intensify debates around corruption, political influence, and the independence of anti-corruption institutions in Zimbabwe. Citizens continue to call for fair and transparent enforcement of the law to address such abuses effectively.
