Zimbabwe has bid farewell to a true liberation hero, Brigadier General (Rtd) Mpandasekwa Mzheri, who was laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare today. President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the burial ceremony, paying tribute to the late hero's contributions to the country's liberation struggle, unification, and development.
Born in 1950, Brig. Gen. Mzheri passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 75. He was one of the first 18 ex-combatants to be attested into the integrated Zimbabwe National Army in 1981, rising through the ranks to become a Brigadier General before retiring in 1999.
The ZANU-PF Politburo, led by President Mnangagwa, unanimously agreed to accord him National Hero Status in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, unification, and development.
During the ceremony, President Mnangagwa handed over the National Flag to Ms. Anesu Mzheri, the eldest daughter of the late hero, as a symbol of the nation's appreciation for his service. Brig. Gen. Mzheri is survived by his four children, Anesu, Ropafadzai, Tinashe, and Kganye.
The nation stands in solidarity with the family and loved ones of the late hero, honoring his legacy and sacrifices for the country's freedom and development. May he rest in peace.
