The Zimbabwe Republic Police has impounded more than 1,000 vehicles during an operation targeting unlicensed vehicles, cars without number plates, and those illegally using blue lights and sirens.

Police said the operation is meant to restore order on the roads and ensure that all vehicles comply with the law.

Authorities have warned that vehicles without registration plates or those fitted with illegal sirens and blue lights will not be allowed to pass through checkpoints and roadblocks.

Meanwhile, residents have called for the operation to also target commuter omnibuses in Harare. Reports indicate that about 16,000 kombis operate in the city, but only around 3,000 are registered and insured.

Residents say many unregistered kombis are putting passengers at risk and contributing to traffic congestion in the city.
