The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to mobile money users, particularly EcoCash customers, about a surge in online fraud complaints. Some users have reported unauthorized transactions and intercepted funds, prompting the police to take action.

In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged the public to remain alert and cautious online. He warned people not to open links from unknown or suspicious sources, especially those advertising unusually cheap or attractive deals, as these could expose users to hackers.

Scammers are tricking individuals into divulging sensitive information, including their mobile number, Personal Identification Number (PIN), and One-Time Password (OTP). They use fake online promotions, such as cheap data packages or quick loans with attractive repayment terms, to lure victims into disclosing their confidential information. Once the scammers gain access to the victim's mobile money wallet, they start abusing their funds.

The ZRP has advised the public to take the following precautions:

- Never share your secret PIN or OTP with anyone
- Be cautious of websites or messages that use fake logos of mobile money companies
- Do not click on suspicious links or respond to unverified promotions
- Only participate in marketing promotions from legitimate, verified mobile money companies' digital platforms
- Report any suspicious activity to the police or mobile money company customer support channels

If you have been affected by mobile money fraud, please report to the nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703 631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197. The ZRP is working closely with mobile money companies and law enforcement agencies to protect customers and bring perpetrators to justice .
