The administration of President Donald Trump has warned that broadcasters could lose their licenses if they continue what officials call misleading coverage of the conflict involving Iran.
The warning came from Brendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who said media organisations must operate in the public interest when reporting on the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Carr said broadcasters spreading “hoaxes and news distortions,” often described as fake news, risk losing their licences when renewal periods arrive.
Writing on the social media platform X, Carr urged media outlets to correct their reporting, adding that public trust in traditional media has declined.
He stressed that restoring credibility in the media is necessary and warned that failure to follow legal standards could result in regulatory action against broadcasters.
