NEW YORK – In a dramatic escalation of US-Latin America relations, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington will assume control of Venezuela following a sweeping US military operation. The operation, Trump claimed, resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump stated that the United States would administer Venezuela until a "safe, proper, and judicious" political transition is achieved. "The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who has been captured and flown out of the country, along with his wife," Trump said in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform. Trump described the operation as unprecedented in scale and effectiveness, saying, "This was one of the most stunning, effective, and powerful displays of American military might and confidence in American history." He added that the last time something of this severity was seen was during World War II.
"We will run the country until Venezuela is safe, stable, and properly governed," Trump declared, arguing that US intervention was necessary to restore peace, order, and justice. "We want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela," he emphasized .
Trump stated that Maduro and Flores face charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation, and weapons offenses. He also linked the intervention to Venezuela's vast oil reserves, signaling a major role for US energy companies. "We're going to have our very large US oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country," Trump said
