Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has cautioned party members against launching premature campaigns to succeed President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of the party's 2027 elective congress. Mutsvangwa emphasized that anyone harboring presidential ambitions should keep them private until the party announces a vacancy in the presidency.
The warning comes amid speculation about potential successors, including Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga and businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who was recently co-opted into the Zanu PF central committee. Tagwirei has been holding inter-district meetings to give feedback on the 2030 agenda, sparking concerns among some senior party members that he is positioning himself for a presidential bid.
Mutsvangwa urged aspirants to rally behind President Mnangagwa and wait for the 2027 congress, when the party will decide on its next leader. He also suggested that aspirants enroll at the party's school of ideology to better understand the party's principles.
The party's elective congress is scheduled for 2027, a year before Mnangagwa's current term expires in 2028. However, the party recently adopted a resolution to extend Mnangagwa's tenure to 2030, which he has said he does not intend to pursue.
