Zimbabwe has recorded eight deaths from common diarrhea in November, with 16,467 cases reported nationwide during the same period. The country's health authorities attribute the surge in cases to increased travel, overcrowding, and lapses in hygiene during the festive season .
Children under five remain the most vulnerable group, accounting for about 42% of reported cases. Provinces with the highest number of cases include Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, and Manicaland. The cumulative burden of common diarrhea in Zimbabwe remains high, with 317,023 cases and 166 deaths reported since the beginning of the year.
Health facilities that recorded deaths include Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare, as well as Beitbridge District in Matabeleland South, Zvimba District in Mashonaland West, and Gokwe South District in Midlands Province. The health authorities are working to improve hygiene and sanitation in public places, and to provide treatment and care to those affected.
To prevent the spread of diarrhea during the festive season, individuals can take several measures, including practicing good hygiene, ensuring safe drinking water, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Health authorities can also improve hygiene and sanitation in public places, such as markets, restaurants, and public transportation
