The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a countrywide operation targeting vehicles fitted with illegal sirens and lights, as well as those without number plates.
In a press statement issued on 10 March 2026, the ZRP expressed concern that some motorists are deliberately removing number plates to evade identification after committing crimes. Offences of concern include armed robberies, kidnapping, and hit-and-run accidents, as well as traffic violations such as driving against the flow of traffic, disobeying red traffic lights, and lane violations.
The operation covers all categories of vehicles, including private cars, company vehicles, Government vehicles, and public service vehicles. The ZRP noted that some public service vehicles are removing registration plates to avoid being traced for traffic offences, and in some cases, for causing road accidents.
Authorities also raised concern over vehicles fitted with illegal sirens, blue lights, and bar lights equipment reserved exclusively for authorised emergency vehicles. The use of such equipment is causing chaos on the roads. Furthermore, the police noted that bar lights in particular disturb the vision of other motorists at night, thereby endangering all road users.
The public is advised that all vehicles found without number plates will be impounded immediately. Such vehicles will only be released after proper registration procedures have been completed and registration plates affixed.
In addition, all illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons, and related gadgets will be removed on the spot. The Zimbabwe Republic Police has stated that no excuses will be entertained.
