CHINHOYI – Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has launched an ambitious Vision 2050 Transformation Compact that will reposition the institution as a globally recognised innovation-driven university, with University Council Chairman Dr. Eng. Martin Manuhwa describing the initiative as the university's "Second Founding."

The landmark announcement was made during CUT's Silver Jubilee celebrations and the opening of its 6th International Research Conference, where university leaders unveiled a 25-year roadmap aimed at transforming the institution into one of Africa's leading centres of technological innovation, research and enterprise.

Addressing delegates, Dr. Eng. Manuhwa said the Transformation Compact goes beyond a conventional strategic plan and represents a bold commitment to preparing the university and the country for a future shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, biotechnology, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing.

"The First Founding gave Zimbabwe a university. The Second Founding will give Zimbabwe an innovation powerhouse," he said.

Dr. Eng. Manuhwa said the Transformation Compact is anchored on ten legacy commitments that will shape the university's development over the next quarter century.

Among the flagship initiatives is the establishment of the CUT Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Frontier Technologies, a multidisciplinary centre that will drive cutting-edge research and strengthen Zimbabwe's technological competitiveness in emerging fields.

The university also plans to establish CUT Innovation Valley, an innovation ecosystem designed to transform research into patents, commercial products, successful enterprises, employment opportunities and export-oriented industries.

Another key initiative is the creation of a National Centre for Technology Foresight, which will monitor global technological trends, advise Government on emerging technologies and produce strategic outlook reports to support national development planning.

Recognising the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence across every sector of society, the university intends to ensure that AI literacy and the ethical use of technology become core competencies for every CUT graduate, regardless of their academic discipline.

The Transformation Compact also seeks to shift research from being measured primarily through academic publications to producing patents, commercial innovations, technology licensing opportunities and industry-driven solutions that directly contribute to Zimbabwe's economic growth.

To strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, CUT will deepen partnerships with the private sector by creating stronger links between every faculty and key industries, ensuring research responds to real economic and societal needs.

As part of efforts to guarantee sustainable financing for innovation, the university will establish a CUT Endowment and Innovation Fund to mobilise resources for groundbreaking research, technology development and entrepreneurial ventures.

Dr. Eng. Manuhwa also announced plans to launch a Global Ambassadors Programme to expand international research partnerships, facilitate technology transfer and strengthen academic exchanges with leading universities across the world.

At continental level, the university will establish a Pan-African Innovation Hub to foster collaborative research and technological solutions in food security, healthcare, climate resilience, mining, energy and sustainable development.

Underlying the Transformation Compact, he said, is a renewed institutional culture founded on integrity, excellence, curiosity, collaboration and public service.

Dr. Eng. Manuhwa emphasised that the university could not achieve its Vision 2050 aspirations alone, calling on Government, industry, development partners, academics, alumni and students to play an active role in the transformation journey.

He urged Government to continue making strategic investments in higher education infrastructure to safeguard Zimbabwe's technological sovereignty and global competitiveness.

Industry, he said, should strengthen partnerships with the university by investing in research, commercialising innovations and mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Development partners were encouraged to support collaborative programmes addressing pressing challenges, including climate change, food security, healthcare, energy and digital inclusion.

He also challenged academics to move beyond teaching and publishing by translating research into practical innovations that improve people's lives, while encouraging students to see themselves not only as graduates but as innovators, entrepreneurs and future creators of jobs.

Concluding his address, Dr. Eng. Manuhwa expressed confidence that the Transformation Compact would define the next era of the university's growth.

"When historians reflect upon this Silver Jubilee, may they say that something remarkable began here. It will be remembered as the moment Chinhoyi University of Technology chose to shape its own destiny," he said.

The unveiling of the Vision 2050 Transformation Compact signals the beginning of a new era for CUT as it seeks to position itself at the forefront of innovation, research and industrial development, while contributing to Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 and the continent's broader technological transformation.I believe this version has a stronger front-page impact. It leads with the major news, maintains a professional newspaper style, and ends by placing CUT's ambitions within the broader national and continental development agenda. -  Denis Kagonye
