Chibuwe Technical High School in Manicaland is fast becoming a model for Heritage Based Education, with ambitious projects in agriculture, innovation, technical skills and sport changing how pupils learn.
A team from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Communication and Advocacy department visited the school this week while shooting videos for this year’s Agricultural Show, and found an institution leaving "no stone unturned" in linking the classroom to production.
At the heart of the school’s work is an 8-hectare plot of previously virgin land that has been cleared, fenced and fitted with drinking troughs. The land is now being used for both crop farming and livestock production. The school is currently breeding a herd of 40 cattle, as well as goats and sheep.
School authorities say the project is part of a broader drive to position Chibuwe as a centre of excellence in school-based projects, entrepreneurship and TechVoc skills. Officials noted that the implementation of the Heritage Based Curriculum is propelling Manicaland to new heights in "education with production."
Beyond the fields, pupils are also gaining practical skills in other departments. Students from the Bakery Section of the Food and Nutrition Department showcased confectionery products made through their baking projects.
In partnership with registered driving schools, the school is also training pupils to drive. Several learners proudly displayed photocopies of driving licences acquired through the programme.
Innovation is another key pillar. The Ministry team toured the school’s Innovation Department where they saw the "Mapipi Motorcar Model" — a technological invention by pupils aimed at solving societal challenges.
Sport has not been left behind. Chibuwe has partnered with the Zimbabwe Football Association, ZIFA, to train pupils as certified soccer referees. Several boys and girls have already acquired Level 2 and 3 refereeing certificates.
Form 3F pupil Nenyasha Komichi testified to the impact of the programme, saying the ZIFA partnership has empowered her as a certified referee.
From cattle pens to bakeries, driving schools to football pitches, Chibuwe Technical High School says it is committed to producing graduates who are academically grounded and practically skilled.
