Zimbabwe’s public health sector is set for a major wellness drive following the launch of the inaugural National Health Sector Wellness Festival. The initiative aims to promote the physical, mental and financial well-being of healthcare workers while bringing free medical services closer to communities.
The five-day festival, organised by the Health Service Commission (HSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, will run from July 6 to 10 at Midlands State University in Gweru under the theme “Stronger Together, Healthier Together.”
The event will bring together healthcare professionals from all 10 provinces, central hospitals and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in what organisers describe as a landmark programme designed to strengthen Zimbabwe’s healthcare workforce.
In a statement, the Health Service Commission said the festival is anchored on Government’s Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which recognise the importance of investing in the country’s frontline health workers to improve service delivery.
“The festival drives the HSC’s strategic mandate under Vision 2030 and NDS2 to build a resilient, motivated healthcare workforce. By investing in the physical, mental and financial well-being of frontline workers, the initiative directly strengthens national service delivery and patient outcomes,” the Commission said.
The event is expected to be officially attended by Douglas Mombeshora and Owen Ncube.
In a significant boost to the programme, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, through her Angel of Hope Foundation, will provide state-of-the-art screening facilities to support the health outreach programme.
While the festival primarily focuses on the welfare of healthcare workers, members of the public will also benefit through free medical services offered throughout the five-day event.
These include cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, blood pressure checks, diabetes screening, HIV testing and counselling, general wellness assessments as well as health education on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles.
Healthcare workers will participate in mental health workshops, burnout prevention programmes, team-building exercises, sporting competitions and wellness activities aimed at improving morale, reducing workplace stress and fostering stronger teamwork across the country’s health institutions.
Organisers believe the programme will contribute to a healthier workforce capable of delivering quality healthcare services to Zimbabweans.
Running concurrently with the festival will be a Health and Wellness Exhibition where pharmaceutical companies, financial institutions, medical aid societies and development partners will showcase innovations and technologies that can help modernise Zimbabwe’s health sector while strengthening public-private partnerships.
The festival will begin with a public march led by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Band and Drum Majorettes from Midlands Hotel to Gweru Provincial Hospital before concluding at the Midlands State University Multi-purpose Hall, where the official proceedings will take place.
The Health Service Commission has invited members of the media to cover what it describes as a historic event that marks the beginning of a national movement placing employee wellness at the centre of health sector transformation.
Officials say a healthy and motivated workforce remains critical to achieving improved healthcare delivery and better patient outcomes, making the inaugural festival an important milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to build a resilient public health system.
