On Thursday night in Toronto, with Croatia 1-0 up and Croatian voices believing, 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo stood up, carried the weight of a nation and reminded everyone why he is called the GOAT.
For 53 minutes it looked like another Croatia masterclass. Ivan Perišić, timeless as ever, slid in to finish after Portugal’s defence hesitated. The stadium erupted in red and white. The pattern was familiar: Croatia compact, patient and dangerous. Portugal had the ball, but no way through.
Roberto Martínez’s side had the higher possession and more attacks. Rafael Leão was buzzing down the left. Bruno Fernandes was pulling strings. Vitinha was everywhere. But Croatia had six shots on target to Portugal’s two, and Diogo Costa had to be sharp to keep it at 1-0.
Then came the moment only Ronaldo gets. A VAR review and a penalty to Portugal. These are the moments CR7 does not miss.
He is 40 and this is his sixth World Cup. No player in history has scored in six different tournaments. He made it 11 World Cup goals in total. He placed the penalty low, hard and certain. The scoreboard read 1-1.
The stadium changed. You could feel it. Croatia’s legs looked heavy. Portugal looked like they had 20 minutes of oxygen left.
Ronaldo did not score the winner himself, but he restored the dream, the hope, the strength and the vision. Portugal’s pressure told and they made it 2-1 in the second half after Gonçalo Ramos hit the back of the net. The GOAT was the spark. He was the reason Croatia had to chase instead of hold. He was the reason Toronto stopped believing in an upset.
That is what the GOAT does. He does not need 90 minutes. He needs one second, one touch, one chance, and the whole game bends.
After the match, Martínez was blunt: “When you have Cristiano, you always have a chance. He showed it again.”
Ronaldo said little. He walked to the corner flag, pointed to the Portugal badge and blew a kiss to the crowd. No theatrics. No need. The numbers did the talking: six World Cups, 11 World Cup goals and the spirit that turns a knockout tie.
Croatia will rue the chances. Luka Modrić, booked in the 59th minute, ran himself into the ground. They created and they hit the target. Unfortunately, they ran into a Portugal team with depth and a man who refuses to let time beat him.
Portugal’s substitutions told the story: Gonçalo Ramos, João Cancelo, Nélson Semedo, Francisco Conceição and Pedro Neto. Fresh legs and fresh ideas. Croatia had heart. Portugal had Ronaldo and a bench that could change a game.
Now Portugal head to Dallas to face Spain on Monday in the Round of 16. Another test, another step.
For Croatia, it is another brave exit. For Portugal, it is another chapter written by the same man.
He is not done and he is not slowing down.
The GOAT is still here.
