Lionel Messi did more than send Argentina into the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 on Friday night. He rewrote the record books again.
In Argentina’s tense 3-2 extra-time victory over World Cup debutants Cape Verde, the 39-year-old scored, assisted and broke a string of World Cup marks that underline why he remains the tournament’s defining figure.
Here are the records Messi broke against Cape Verde:
1. Most World Cup appearances by a man
Messi played his 30th World Cup match, becoming the first man in history to reach the milestone. He is now four clear of Cristiano Ronaldo in second place.
2. 20 World Cup goals
His 29th-minute opener took him to 20 World Cup goals, the first player to reach the mark.
3. Scored in all four Argentina games in 2026
With the goal, Messi became just the fourth player to score in all of his team’s matches at a single World Cup, joining Brazil’s Rivaldo and Ronaldo in 2002 and Colombia’s James Rodriguez in 2014.
4. First 7-goal haul outside Europe since 1970
Messi’s seventh goal of the tournament made him the first man to score 7+ goals at a World Cup while playing for a club outside Europe since Brazil’s Jairzinho scored seven for Botafogo in 1970.
5. Five straight knockout games with a goal
The strike extended his run to five consecutive World Cup knockout matches with a goal, the longest such streak since Opta began collecting data in 1966.
6. 7+ goals at two different World Cups
With seven goals in 2026 to match his tally from 2022, Messi became the first man to score 7 or more goals at two separate World Cups.
7. Most knockout-stage goal involvements
Messi now has 12 goal involvements in World Cup knockout matches, surpassing Pelé and Kylian Mbappé, who both had 11.
8. Eight straight World Cup games with a goal
The goal also extended his scoring streak to eight consecutive World Cup games, with 12 goals in that run. No player in the competition’s history has a longer streak.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni called Cape Verde “a great team” after the match, but it was Messi who again settled a game that threatened to slip away. His corner in the 111th minute led to the winner as Cristian Romero’s header deflected in off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges.
Messi now heads to Atlanta for the Round of 16 against Egypt with seven goals in the tournament, matching his Golden Ball-winning haul from Qatar 2022.
At 39, with 30 World Cup games and 20 World Cup goals, the numbers no longer feel like statistics. They read like a career summary of the tournament itself.
