Health officials have launched a major Ebola treatment trial in Bunia as the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain continues to spread, with more than 1,400 infections and over 430 deaths recorded.
The trial will test two treatments: the antiviral drug remdesivir and the experimental antibody therapy MBP134. Participants will be monitored for 28 days, officials said this week.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the study could run for several months and may enroll up to 1,000 patients.
Health workers in Bunia are continuing to treat Ebola patients as the outbreak persists. The disease is concentrated in Ituri Province, where ongoing conflict and limited resources have hampered response efforts.
Despite the challenges, officials said more than 200 people have recovered with supportive care.
Authorities hope the trial will identify effective treatments for Ebola and strengthen the global response to future outbreaks.
