HARARE – Econet Zimbabwe has cancelled a planned concert featuring South African duo Mafikizolo following public backlash, with social media users urging the company to support local artists amid reports of anti-immigrant hostility in South Africa.

The telecommunications company faced criticism this week after announcing the event. Videos, voice notes and posts circulated on TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook and X called for Econet to reconsider, citing tensions affecting Zimbabweans living across the Limpopo.

“We have nothing against South African musicians, but timing is everything. Our brothers and sisters are living in fear, some are returning home after losing businesses and livelihoods. This is the time to promote Zimbabwean artists and stand with our own people,” one widely shared WhatsApp message read.

Another commentator on TikTok questioned the optics of the event. “Our people are crying for help while we are spending money importing entertainment. Let local musicians take the stage and let corporate Zimbabwe show solidarity with its customers,” the commentator said in a video that gained traction online.

Users argued that Zimbabwe has internationally acclaimed musicians who could headline major events and should be prioritised. Some said companies that benefit from remittances sent by Zimbabweans in South Africa should demonstrate support for those communities.

While contributors stressed their concerns were not directed at South African musicians personally, they said corporate decisions should reflect the prevailing national mood. “We love South African music and culture because we are one African family, but solidarity must come first. Zimbabwe has enough talented artists who can carry this event while our people heal,” a Facebook user wrote.

The debate comes amid concern over the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa, where videos on social media have shown protests and anti-immigrant demonstrations.

By yesterday, the planned concert had become one of the most discussed topics on Zimbabwean social media. Reports indicated the event had been cancelled following sustained public pressure.

Econet Zimbabwe had not issued a formal public statement on the cancellation by the time of publication. Efforts to get a comment from the company were unsuccessful.

Mafikizolo’s management could not be reached for comment.
