US and Iran Resume Strikes, Threatening Ceasefire as Tensions Rise in Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI – Mutual strikes between the United States and Iran resumed on Thursday, raising the risk of a wider escalation and jeopardizing a fragile ceasefire, according to Bloomberg. 

Bloomberg reported that US forces carried out strikes targeting Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense facilities, drone storage sites, and mine-laying equipment. 

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched missiles and drones at the Ali al-Salem airbase in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet’s naval base at Salman Port in Bahrain. 

The Joint Maritime Information Center has raised the security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to “significant,” Bloomberg said. The Strait is a key shipping chokepoint for global energy supplies. 

The IRGC later stated that, in accordance with the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, “the movement in the Strait of Hormuz is controlled by Iran, and from now on, violators will be dealt with more strictly than before,” according to Bloomberg. 

Bloomberg noted that the Strait has become a critical point of leverage for Tehran, adding that a near-total blockage of the waterway previously contributed to shocks in the global economy. 

There was no immediate confirmation from US or Iranian officials on the status of the ceasefire at the time of publication.
